Student’s Hostel Estense
The Cooperative’s first management outside Sicily: the municipal youth hostel of Ferrara, in a historic building in the city centre.
The assignment
In 2007 the Cooperative won the Municipality of Ferrara’s tender to run the municipal youth hostel. Management began in March 2008.
The Cooperative’s administration is based in the same building.
What we run
The hostel and all related services: reception, rooms, cleaning, breakfasts, bar and café and, since 2009, the restaurant for guests. We also offer bike hire, the most natural way to get around Ferrara.
The building is protected by the Soprintendenza, Italy’s heritage authority, with frescoed coffered ceilings on the main floor. It was renovated in 2019.
Casa senza frontiere
In 2011, on the strength of our results, the Municipality of Ferrara extended the concession to Casa senza frontiere: a 23-bed eco-built holiday house with solar panels, just outside the city walls. We ran it until 2017, when the Municipality took the building back for another use.
